Napoleon & Josephine is a 5 reel, 50 payline slot from WMS that is playable on all devices from 50p a spin. A land based favourite, it benefits from win both ways technology and a Free Spins Bonus feature where you can get up to 300 free spins – high variance, simple action at its best! Napoleon and Josephine slot has been very popular in land-based casinos in North America for several years and has now made the transition to online gaming, as their best slots inevitably do such as Raging Rhino, Kronos and Ruby Slippers.
Josephine de Beauharnais was born in 1763 and would become the first Empress of France. Josephine would marry twice in her life, the first time at the age of 16 to Alexandre, who would later be guillotined during the reign of terror. She would have affairs with many leading politicians of the time and would eventually catch the eye of the Emperor Napoleon, who courted her by sending letter after letter. She would eventually succumb to his charm and they would marry in 1796.
This online slot features Super Stacks where wins can come along very quickly, while instant multipliers are applied to many of the wins gained using the central characters of the game.

The Empress Josephine Slot Gameplay
The moment you enter the game, you’ll be struck by the beauty of Empress Josephine – this alone might be reason enough to play this High 5 Games designed slot. She has long dark, flowing hair and a beautiful face, her cheekbones prominent and her bright red lips pouting. When landing a win with the Empress, you’ll see animation where the scene cuts to her lounging in a Chez Longue, fanning herself, while lights sparkle in the air, enhancing her beauty even more. The reels are housed in an ornate golden frame, and this alongside the rich array of symbols, gives the slot an air of money. The accompanying sound is most definitely grand – a resounding sound meeting each spin, while wins are met with an uplifting regal sound.
The game is housed in a somewhat standard 5×3 reel configuration with a total of 40 pay lines. These 40 lines are set as the default amount; however you can enjoy just 30, 20 or 10 lines, while you’ll even have the opportunity of playing just a single line. These lines can be played for as little as just 1c, the maximum stake being $10 per line.
As you might expect, Josephine is the top paying standard symbol on the reels, worth 50 coins for the maximum five in a row, while Napoleon and a golden statue both pay 20 coins. A blue music box and a collection of golden pots pay 10 coins, while the standard symbols are completed by the playing card letters A, K, Q and J as well as the number 5.
The payouts listed above might seem on the small side in comparison to some other slots, but the Super Stacks system and the added multipliers certainly counters the smaller payouts. Before each spin, one symbol is selected at random to be the Super Stacked one, this one dominating the reels, stacked highly on each. This leads to a situation where you might find this particular symbol filling a number of the reels completely, promising a great number of wins (perhaps all of the pay lines) with just a single spin. Every win achieved with Josephine, Napoleon, the statue, the music box and the golden pots will also attract a multiplier of either 2x, 3x or 5x.
These wins are aided by the wild symbol, this title symbol substituting for any other symbol on the reels apart from the scatter (the multiplier will not apply if a wild is used in the win however). This wild is also the highest paying symbol in the slot, worth 500 coins for the maximum 5 in a row.

The Empress Josephine Slot Bonus Feature
The final symbol on the reels is a crown sat atop a gold-lined purple cushion. This is the scatter symbol and will activate the free games bonus feature when completely filling reels 2, 3 and 4 – this only possible when the scatter is picked as the Super Stacked symbol. You’ll now pick one of the scatters which will reveal one of the top 5 paying standard symbols, this becoming the Super Stacked symbol throughout the feature. Because only the top 5 symbols can now be Super Stacked, the payouts expected during the bonus feature are much higher than in the base game.
Empress Josephine Slot Conclusion
The life of Empress Josephine was certainly an eventful one and the same can be said about this High 5 Games slot. The Super Stacks system is a good one, making for some very exciting spins and the excitement levels rise even higher when the multiplier is applied to some of those spins. The Super Stacks will also show the beautiful Josephine filling the reels at times, which certainly has its appeal! All in all, this slot is a good representation of one of history’s most enduring tales.
Many stories have been told of the tempestuous relationship of Napoleon and Josephine around the turn of the 19th century and now the famed couple have become the subject of an online slot. This WMS designed slot features both of the characters on the reels, although each has their own role. Napoleon is the high paying stacked symbol, while Josephine is the symbol that allows entry into the free spins bonus round, where an added bonus could await. This game also has a pair of jackpot prizes too, which can make for one amazing slot session.

Base Game: Napoleon and Josephine Slot Basics
Napoleon and Josephine is a five-reel slot, each of the reels being four symbols high. The game pays from left to right as usual and wins will come along when hitting three or more symbols in a row. During the base game, Napoleon is stacked throughout and will fill entire reels at times. This can be really useful if these stacked Napoleons line up in a row, meaning that a large number of the game’s win lines could all be paying out at once. Other standard symbols on the reels include tiaras propped upon a cushion, a resplendent palace, expensive necklaces and war medals. These standard symbols are completed by the four playing card suits – hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades.
One of the most useful symbols in the game is the cannon which acts as the wild. This will substitute for any other symbol in the game apart from Josephine and will give players many more winning opportunities. Some of the biggest wins in the game come when this wild links up a number of the stacked Napoleon symbols – a single wild turning an insignificant spin into a huge winning one.
Free Spins, Extra Spins and Two Progressive Jackpots
So far, Josephine hasn’t really had a look in (which is exactly what happened at the end of her relationship with Napoleon) but Josephine plays a central role as the bonus symbol, activating the free spins feature. If you manage to land the Josephine scatter three times across any of the reels you’ll find yourself with 10 free spins. However, hitting Josephine four or five times will increase the number of spins to 20 and 50 respectively, which will certainly make for a very profitable feature.
You’ll notice that some of the scatter symbols also have a number attached such as +5 or +10. If you manage to land the feature with one of these bonus symbols, this number will simply be added to the number of free spins. For example, if you hit the minimum three scatters where one of the scatters has the +5 symbol attached, you’ll have a total of 15 free spins.
If you want more good news, Josephine continues to appear throughout the feature meaning it can be retriggered. Land three or more and the appropriate number of spins will simply be added to your remaining spins. The added numbers also appear throughout the feature, so retriggering can be every bit as good as landing the feature during the base game.
As well as the free spins bonus, you’ll also find two progressive jackpot pay outs. You have both a mini and a major progressive, and while either of those wins won’t be enough to pay off a mortgage or allow you to quit your job the next day, a nice four figure win will be welcome at any slot session. These smaller jackpots do have an added advantage in the fact that they are much more achievable than their life changing compatriots.

19th Century Bling – The Napoleon and Josephine Slot Design
While the design of the game isn’t as high end as some of the slots on the casino floor, this WMS design does have some nice touches. The best of these comes when you land a win with the stacked Napoleon symbols, the four single images of Napoleon now merging into a single image of the Emperor now sitting astride his horse. Another nice aspect of the game is the change of color scheme when you enter the bonus feature, the slot moving from a dark blue backing to a rich, deep red.
Will the Napoleon and Josephine Slot Conquer You?
Fans of historical themed slots will certainly enjoy this one. In many ways, the game play is standard, with a straightforward base game and a free spins bonus feature – though there are a nice couple of differences which give this game some originality. First, you have the fact that the highest paying symbol in the game is stacked, meaning that some amazing wins can quickly come your way. Second, activating the feature can give you a large number of spins – 10, 20 or 50 as standard, with the added boost of those bonus numbers. This isn’t the most diverse slot you’ll ever play, though it is certainly worth a spin.
About Napoleon and Josephine
Before meeting Napoleon, the life story of Josephine was a fascinating one. In 1779 Josephine married Alexandre, the son of a French nobleman, who was due to marry her sister who sadly died just prior to the marriage. The marriage produced two children, although the couple lived separate lives until ten years later, when Alexandre would meet his fate at the hands of the guillotine. Life became difficult for Josephine and her two children, so she became a mistress to men of wealth to survive and it was during this time that she met Napoleon.
In 1795 they became lovers and a letter between the two in December of that year saw Napoleon state, ‘I awake full of you. Your image and the memory of last night’s intoxicating pleasures has left no rest to my senses.’ He proposed just a month later just before taking command of the army.

The marriage was a stormy one, with rumors that Josephine wasn’t faithful in Napoleon’s absence, while Napoleon took on mistresses in retaliation. The marriage never produced any children and the historic couple would eventually divorce in 1809, Napoleon making it known that he wanted a wife who could produce an heir.
